The centre operates an internationally significant research infrastructure, including a vegetation area monitoring more than a quarter of a million plants, a crane allowing scientists access to the canopies of trees, and a research area covering forests from 200 to 3,700 metres above sea level. The centre also trains half of all postgraduate biology students in the country and its training of paraecologists is considered a model for other tropical countries.
